19th annual MovieGuide Faith & Values Awards - winners
The 19th annual MovieGuide Faith & Values Awards Gala was held on Friday night. MovieGuide is a publication by Ted Baehr, who is also the Chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission. Unlike the recent list of top films by Arts & Faith, this list is not so much about artistic merit as it is about advocating for a conservative Christian perspective.
Their top prize for film went to Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. It is the third film in the series of films based on the books by C.S. Lewis. The number one film on their top ten list of films for families was Toy Story 3. For mature audiences, their number one film was Secretariat.
Their Faith and Freedom Awards for Promoting Positive American Values award for film went to Mao's Last Dancer, about Chinese dancer Li Cunxin's defection to the United States.
The Epiphany prize for television was awarded to Amish Grace. One of the television movie's actors Madison Mason claimed the Grace Award for Most Inspiring Performance in Television. Kevin Sorbo won the Grace Award for Film with his performance in What If. . . Sorbo was the host of the gala event.
The organization releases an annual Report to the Entertainment Industry which make the dubious claim that Christian-themed movies are more profitable and should be the focus of the industry. For example, their study claims that movies with messages advocating a "Christian" worldview earned $105 million and those advocating "miscellaneous morality" earned $10 million. This seems highly unlikely since the top five earning films in 2010 were Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Inception and Shrek Forever After. None of them are particularly Christian in their outlook. In fact, each of them have magic and/or fantasy elements that may put off some conservative Christians.
