AARP's 10th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards - winners
AARP The Magazine by AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) presented their 10th annual Movies for Grownups Awards gala on Monday in Beverly Hills, Calif. The King's Speech added to its haul of prizes by taking the Best Movie for Grownups award and Best Actor for star Colin Firth.
Firth was introduced by co-star Geoffrey Rush and received a standing ovation. He also got cheers and laughs with his speech, saying, "It's funny how much fun we have with the word 'grownup,' because we actors just don't make very convincing grownups. We act in imaginary worlds and we find it very difficult to come to terms with the real one. When I told a senior member of my own family I was being acknowledged for something grown up, she said, 'Finally.' "
Leslie Manville won Best Actress for her lively performance in Mike Leigh's Another Year. Supporting awards went to John Malkovich for Secretariat and Phylicia Rashad in For Colored Girls.
Belying the expectation that older people wouldn't like energetic films with young actors, the Best Director prize went to Danny Boyle for his stylish work in 127 Hours.
They also named The Kids Are All Right to be the Best Love Story for its lead couple of Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. Best Comedy was City Island. Waste Land was named Best Documentary.
Robert Redford was on hand to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. He told the audience, "The AARP is about retiring, but I’m not about to retire. There is just too much work to do."
AARP The Magazine annual Movies for Grownups Awards celebrate the kinds of films that the magazine's 47 million over-50 readers want to see (it claims the highest circulation of any magazine in the world). Colin Firth turned 50 during the 35th Toronto International Film Festival this past fall.
