This morning, the Toronto International Film Festival announced that Buenos Aires, Argentina has been selected for 2011 City to City programme. Kate Lawrie Van de Ven will be the programmer for the series.
This is the third year for the City to City programme at TIFF. In its inaugural year, the selection of Tel Aviv was controversial and the festival received some political heat. Canadian filmmaker John Greyson withdrew his documentary short Covered in protest and numerous artists and intellectuals signed a letter denouncing the programme. The festival responded with an open letter refuting the charges of interference.
In its second year, the festival chose Istanbul, which had the potential to become another hot potato when a Turkish flotilla carrying humanitarian aid was raided by Israeli military and nine activists were killed. That incident, however, did not end up casting a shadow on the festival.
This year's choice of Buenos Aires brings the programming to the Americas and introduces North American audiences to an emerging but vibrant community of filmmaking talent. The programme usually includes both features and short films as well as industry events such as talks or panel discussions.
The 36th Toronto International Film Festival takes place from September 8 to 18,
2011.
