Yellow Face, David Henry Hwang at Hart House Theatre

From March 4-12, Hart House Theatre and the fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company present the Toronto premiere of the play Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang. The play won an Obie Award for its semi-autobiographical portrayal of Hwang's own Broadway failure written in response to the casting controversy of Miss Saigon. It was his third Obie Award for playwriting.

On March 8, Hart House will host the event A Conversation with David Henry Hwang. Hwang is a Tony Award-winning playwright and librettist. He is a frequent collaborator with Phillip Glass and wrote the libreatto for Howard Shore's opera The Fly. He also wrote the screenplay for David Cronenberg's M. Butterfly, based on his own play.

The production of Yellow Face is directed by Esther Jun and stars Ben Wong, Carl Swanson, Charmaine Lau, Daniel Krolik, David Fujino, Emily Opal Smith and Kristoffer Pedlar.

Hart House Theatre is located in the University of Toronto at 7 Hart House Circle.

Yellow Face

Yellow Face
"A tempest in an Oriental teapot"
Toronto Premiere
Written by David Henry Hwang
Mar 4 - 12, 2011
Yellow Face is a  head-spinning backstage comedy from the Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang in which mistaken racial identities collide with family, media and politics. This ferociously funny, utterly unreliable memoir chronicles David Henry Hwang’s struggle to define racial identity in the mixed-up melting pot of contemporary America. Part fact, part fiction - provocative yet full of heart, Yellow Face is a tale of cultural politics, family fortunes, and artistic integrity; an insightful look at the pitfalls and promise of our “P.C.” world.
