Call for submissions: Quebec Writing Competition 2011


CBC Radio One and the Quebec Writers' Federation have put out a call for submissions for the 2011 Quebec Writing Competition. It is the 12th edition of the competition for short stories or creative non-fiction in English by Quebec writers.

Three winners will receive a $1000 prize, broadcast on CBC Radio's Cinq à Six, and publication in an anthology by Véhicule Press. The Grand Prize winner will be published in Maisonneuve Magazine, while the other two prize winners will be made available on the Maisonneuve Magazine website. In addition, the competition will choose 10 honourable mentions.

They do not accept free verse, poetry, screenwriting or playwriting. Submissions must be original and unpublished work of 1,200 words or less and it should fall into one of the following categories: Travel Writing; Life Stories; Short Fiction; Family Narratives; Humour; or Personal Essays.

Last year's winner was Taqralik Partridge for her short story "Igloolik." The Second Prize Winners were Michele Ann Jenkins for "Mothers' Little Helper" and Joshua Levy for "Speed Dating."

All entries and payments must be postmarked on or before midnight E.S.T. on May 1, 2011.

2011 Quebec Writing Competition open!

Get writing Quebec and send us your short stories or creative nonfiction (travel writing, life stories, short fiction, family narratives, humour, personal essays) by May 1st and you could win the following:

- One of three prizes of $1,000
- Broadcast of your story on CBC Radio One's Cinq à Six
- Publication in Maisonneuve Magazine and in an anthology by Véhicule Press

The Quebec Writing Competition is the result of a partnership between CBC Radio One, the Quebec Writers' Federation, Maisonneuve Magazine and Véhicule Press.


Contest Details

Eligibility
The competition is open to all residents of Quebec with the following exceptions:
  • Employees of the CBC and of the contest sponsors.
  • Winners of the previous year's Quebec Writing Competition.
 Requirements
  • Maximum length of text is 1,200 words.
  • Only original, unpublished texts will be accepted.
  • Each of the 4 copies submitted must be stapled.
  • Texts must be typewritten in English and double-spaced.
  • Each page must be numbered and include the title ONLY. DO NOT include author's name on the text pages.
  • Word counts are strictly enforced. They do not include the title of the work.
  • An electronic copy of all shortlisted texts will be required in order to verify word count.
  • Fax submissions will not be accepted.
 Entries
  • Writers may submit as many texts as they wish.
  • Writers should send in final versions of texts only.
  • No revisions will be accepted once the text has been submitted.
  • Each submission must be accompanied by a completed entry form and a $10 fee. 
  • Unfortunately, it is not possible to send out an acknowledgement of the texts received, nor will texts be returned.
  • Do not include a separate cover page.
 Awards
  • Three prizes of $1,000, a broadcast on CBC Radio and publication in an anthology from Véhicule Press.
  • The Grand Prize winner will also be published in Maisonneuve Magazine. 
  • The texts of the other two prize winners will be published on the Maisonneuve Magazine website.
  • All three winning texts will be broadcast on CBC Radio's Cinq à Six.
  • The three winners and ten runners-up will be honoured at the Quebec Writers' Federation's annual Literary Awards Gala, held in November 2011. 
  • Entrants remain owners of the copyright to their texts, subject to what is provided for in the contest regulations.
Fees
  • A fee of $10 must accompany each text entered.
  • Make cheque or money order payable to Quebec Writers' Federation. This non-refundable fee covers some of the administrative costs of this competition.
  • Multiple submissions may be paid with a single cheque only if all entries arrive under same cover.
Deadlines
  • All entries and payments must be postmarked on or before May 1st, 2011 at midnight (Eastern Standard Time).
