Franco-Fête, Toronto’s International Francophone Festival is proud to announce an exciting line-up for the 29th annual festival of Francophone arts and culture. From June 24 to 26, Franco-Fête is once again teaming up with Harbourfront Centre to feature the best Canadian francophonie has to offer. As the biggest event of its kind in all Toronto and Southwestern Ontario, Franco-Fête will offer FREE activities in French for all ages from kids' events and family-friendly shows to top-billed artists from Canada and around the world.
A great and rare experience, Franco-Fête aims to bring together people of all languages and backgrounds from across the GTA to celebrate Canada’s rich and diverse francophone heritage.
This year, Franco-Fête is venturing into global hot spots and will feature a Spotlight on France, featuring from Tours, French nu-soul singer Benjamin Duterde a.k.a. Ben L’Oncle Soul; from Strasbourg, the French pop, Latin group LéOparleurs; from Marseilles, folk pop rock duo Alcaz and the Parisian reggae sensation, Kyssi Wète. Franco-Fête also welcomes to Toronto Franco-New Zealanders The Mamaku Project with their Pacifica, dub-reggae and jazz stylings.
The outstanding line up will also feature an eclectic mix of acclaimed Canadian artists such as Montreal’s international singing and piano sensation Coeur de Pirate; the five-piece electronica, Hip Hop and Jazz band Misteur Valaire; Montreal folk singer Jean-François Lessard; Mathémagie with two-time Canadian Magic Champion, Ottawa’s Éric Leclerc; from Alma, QC the infectious reggae and world music sound of multi-ethnik, electro-organik Ouanani; Toronto’s own Franco-Ontarian Andrews Sisters, Les Chiclettes; from Cap-Chat, QC, folk-singer songwriter Patrice Michaud; multi-award winning opera singer and children’s entertainer Nathalie Choquette; Juno-nominated Franco-Ontarian solo artist Mike Ford; popular Senegalese Québécois humorist Boucar Diouf; from Lafontaine, ON, Juno Award-nominated singer and multi-instrumentalist Damien Robitaille; and finally, from Montreal multi-award winning artist Bernard Adamus.

Ben L'Oncle Soul est une découverte de la division française du label Motown. Originaire de Tours, Ben est comme son nom l'indique, influencé par le soul des années 60/70. Ses influences vont de Stevie Wonder à Marvin Gaye en passant par les classiques que sont Otis Redding, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Roy Hargrove.
Benjamin Duterde a.k.a. Ben L’Oncle Soul (‘Ben the Soul Uncle’), is a French nu-soul singer from the town of Tours. Duterde first gained prominence in his home country with the Soul Wash EP (2009), which featured six covers of songs by Gnarls Barkley, Spice Girls, Katy Perry and, most notably, The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army). Ben’s first full-length album, entitled simply Ben L’Oncle Soul was released in the summer of 2010 and was put out internationally on the Motown label.

Coeur de pirate, c’est le projet de Béatrice Martin, pianiste dans l’âme au talent incontestable. Ses influences oscillent entre chanson française et musique folk, deux des sonorités qui ont bercé son enfance. En 2009, elle est nominée au Juno, aux GAMIQ à 4 reprises, en plus d’être en lice pour le prix Polaris. De plus, elle a fait partie de Révélation Radio-Canada de la Musique et, en mars 2010, elle remporte un Victoire de la musique en France dans la catégorie « Chanson de l’année » pour la pièce « Comme des enfants ». Finalement, elle a remporté un Félix pour l’artiste québécois s’étant le plus illustré hors Québec lors de l’Autre Gala de l’ADISQ, au début novembre 2010.
Coeur De Pirate is a Québécoise singer/songwriter and pianist who made her acclaimed eponymous album debut in 2008 and eventually rose to Top Five success in France the following year with her smash hit single Comme des Enfants. Born Béatrice Martin, in Quebec, she began her recording career in 2007, posting demo versions of her songs on MySpace. She made her full-length album debut in 2008 with the eponymous album Coeur De Pirate on the label Grosse Boîte. While the album was championed right away by indie pop scenesters in Quebec, it caught on more steadily from a commercial standpoint and was given a big boost when photographer Francis Vachon used the album track Ensemble in a YouTube video that became a viral hit on the Internet. Nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards, Coeur De Pirate was released in France in 2009 in association with Universal Music. It became a big hit there, reaching the Top Ten of the French albums chart for several weeks in summer 2009 and spawning the Top Five hit single Comme Des Enfants. In addition to her solo work as Coeur De Pirate, Martin founded Pearls, an English-language side project that made its debut on MySpace.

Né de la rencontre entre Tui Mamaki, voix du pacifique sud et Monsieur Escargot, multi-instrumentiste parisien expatrié en Nouvelle-Zélande, Mamaku Project embarquent le spectateur dans l'univers poétique d'un cirque apatride. Inspirés par l'incroyable environnement naturel Néo-Zélandais et imprégné des « patchworks » culturels de leurs racines françaises et australes, ils apportent une bouffée d'air frais avec un paysage musical unique en son genre, une concoction à la fois détonnante et planante.
The Mamaku Project is the meeting of two French/NewZealanders. To bridge their cultures, they have woven French Bohemian Roots, South Pacifica Dub and Eastern flavours from their travels into a captivating musical concoction, wowing festival audiences of all ages in NZ and abroad since 2005. Featuring voice, accordion, synthesizers, samplers, nguru (Maori flute), and textural, cinematic guitar by Gareth Price. The repertoire plays on interactions between acoustic and electronic impulses and delivers evocative poetical texts, often inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Aotearoa/NZ, where they are based.

Celui qu’on compare encore souvent à Desjardins, à Plume ou même à Brel a peaufiné sa plume pour nous servir un nouvel album plus personnel, plus mature et plus fin, contribuant à confirmer ce que Stanley Péan pensait déjà de lui au printemps dernier, soit qu’il était « un des grands [de la chanson québécoise], un de ceux qui montent ». Toujours aussi éclaté et surprenant, le spectacle que Jean-François Lessard nous propose est plus « folk » que jamais avec du banjo, du ukulele et de la contrebasse… Du brut et de la finesse tout à la fois !

Damien Robitaille, originaire de Lafontaine en Ontario, en a surpris plus d’un avec son premier album, « L’homme qui me ressemble ». Interprète hors du commun, doté d’un charme maladroit bien singulier, le jeune homme est tout sauf prévisible. Gagnant du prix Félix-Leclerc, en nomination à l’ADISQ 2010 dans huit catégories dont la prestigieuse « Spectacle auteur-compositeur-interprète », il sera accompagné sur scène de 6 musiciens gentlemen. Au programme : une musique pour tous les âges aux accents funk, rocksteady, pop et soul, avec un petit côté rétro 70’s chic et chaud. Impossible de ne pas craquer pour Damien Robitaille.
Born and raised in Lafontaine, Ontario (North of the GTA), Robitaille started his music career at a young age. Halfway through his university career he was a finalist in Ontario Pop, a franco-ontarian competition, in which he won a scholarship to attend a one year program at “L’Ecole Nationale de la Chanson” in Granby, Quebec. In 2004, Robitaille played at the Festival de la chanson de Granby (Granby Song Festival) in which he was a finalist. This festival, as well as the Francouvertes festival in Montreal, Quebec where he won first prize, helped Robitaille become a successful musician in Quebec.

Arrivé à Montréal via la Pologne à l’âge de trois ans, le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que Bernard Adamus s’est parfaitement intégré à sa ville d’adoption. Grandement influencé par le blues, il se produit d’abord en faisant des reprises de cette musique touchante et vraie, pour ensuite prendre ce touchant et ce vrai, et les inscrire dans ses propres textes, en français.
An immigrant to Montreal via Poland at age three, the least we could say about Bernard Adamus is that he has perfectly integrated into his adopted hometown. In fact, he turned his working-class neighbourhoods into the centre of his songs: Hochelaga, Centre-Sud, Rosemont, their streets and residents become heroes in a new kind of urban fables. Mainly influenced by blues, he first establishes himself by covering this touching and honest genre of music. He then applied this touching honestly to his own French lyrics.

Mike Ford is a singer-songwriter who may be best known as part of the nineties band Moxy Früvous. Through a variety of rhythms, musical textures, his new show is aimed at youth and based on the adventures of Étienne Brûlé in the great lakes, and the 18th century reality of the First Nations. The narrator draws from contemporary realities to explore the themes of the environment, consumerism and technology. A musical ride perfect for the whole family!

Mimi la Diva Malbouffa a une grande passion pour l’opéra et elle aime la partager. Mimi explique les origines italiennes de ce grand art et montre que l’opéra, c’est comme une histoire de dodo musicale avec des personnages attachants, drôles, qui chantent leurs joies et leurs peines. Mais Mimi a aussi un péché mignon pas si mignon que ça : elle a un petit faible pour les frites et la malbouffe ? Un spectacle parfait pour les jeunes de 4 à 12 ans et les adultes qui les accompagnent. Nathalie Choquette is an incredible soprano who has won several Félix awards. Born in Tokyo, she now calls Montreal her home. Mimi la Diva Malbouffa has a huge passion for opera that she loves to share. Mimi explains the Italian origins of this great art and shows us that opera is just like a ridiculous musical with ridiculous characters who sing their joys and pains. But Mimi also has a little vice... a weakness for french fries and junk food!
