26th Annual Imagen Awards - winners [UPDATED]
Last night, the 26th Imagen Awards took place at the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Spanish for “image,” they are the industry awards for positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino cultures in entertainment. The evening was hosted by the charismatic actress Maria Canals Barrera, who wore an elegant red dress.
Over 500 people attended the event, including representatives of the entertainment industry and the Latino community, such as Edward James Olmos, Kenny Ortega, Esai Morales, Mark Ballas, Cote de Pablo, Eva La Rue, Lupe Ontiveros, Victoria Justice and Alexa Vega, among others. Also in attendance were U.S. Secretary of Labor and former local congresswoman, Hilda L. Solis, and PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger.
The film section was led by Gun Hill Road which won for Best Feature Film and for Best Actor (Esai Morales). Michelle Rodriguez won Best Actress for her work in Tropico de Sangre (Rains of Injustice).
Law & Order: Los Angeles won for Best Primetime Television Program. Freddy Rodriguez received Best Actor for CHAOS. Martha Higareda was named Best Actress for Lies in Plain Sight.
Edward James Olmos said he was happy for the celebration of the awards but also noted that much remains to be done to Hispanics have equal representation on the screen. "We are more backward than any other time in the history of this country," said Olmos.
