The Toronto Fringe Festival has put out a call for submissions for its 24th annual festival. They are accepting applications for three options: the 2012 New Play Contest, the lottery for the 2012 Fringe Festival and proposals for the Site-Specific Category of the Fringe Festival.
The New Play Contest is open to all Canadians who are permanent residents. Submissions must be new, original work of 90 minutes or less. The deadline is October 24th by 5PM or when 80 plays are received, whichever comes first.
The Fringe Festival slots are determined by lottery. The lottery for the 2012 Festival will take place on November 28, but the applications must be received by November 7. The Site-Specific category is for shows that cannot be performed in traditional theatres and venues. The deadline is Friday March 2nd at 5pm or when a maximum of 20 production slots have been filled, whichever comes first.
For the first time, the Toronto Fringe is offering a free two-part info session on the Fringe Lottery and Site-Specific performances, October 5 starting at 5:30pm at the Fringe Creation Lab (720 Bathurst St, 4th floor). Part I - Fringe Lottery Q&A (5:30pm – 6:25pm) deals with questions regarding the process of the lottery system. Part II - Actors Have Left the Building (6:35pm – 7:45pm) is a discussion with Claire Wynveen and Matthew Walker of Litmus Theatre on how to create a successful site-specific show. To RSVP, email Andrea Roberts outreach@fringetoronto.com by Tuesday October 4th.
The 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival takes place from July 4-15, 2012.

Welcome to the 2012 Fringe Lottery!
Friends, Fringers, Countrypersons, and Internationalists,
We're so excited for the 24th annual Fringe and hope you are too.
As you have undoubtedly experienced, the past few years have seen extraordinary change at the Fringe – our Next Stage Festival in January has grown in audience numbers by 40% over the past 4 years; we are entering our third summer in our home in the Honest Ed’s parking lot; we introduced the wildly successful Visual Fringe in the alleyway of Honest Ed's; our Site Specific category (that replaced BYOVs) had some incredible offers; we continue to strengthen our youth and artist outreach programs, and just before last year’s Festival, we moved into the Fringe Creation Lab. We now have 3500 square feet of administrative and affordable rehearsal space that is available to you.
Our mandate continues to be simple: we enable access to creative opportunities for anyone who wants to tell a story and anyone who wants to hear one. The Fringe isn't just a talent market or a stepping stone, it's a place to express and challenge yourself and challenge those around you, and most importantly to take risks.
Last year also saw the launch of our new performer site, the central system where all communication, forms, questionnaires, and the new Participant Handbook are housed. We wanted to provide our artists with a more streamlined experience so they could focus on the creative process. This year, we are committed to enhancing the ‘first-time’ experience, from both the artist and audience perspective. We want everyone to enjoy the Festival as much as possible and as always we are committed to securing resources to make sure our operations do your work justice.
Again this year, along with the established lottery categories, we are going into our second year with the Site-Specific Art Category.
For your part, we're calling on you to keep challenging us, keep bringing us art that is relevant and exciting, and that represents the diversity of our community. There's room for everything at the Fringe, from mainstream offerings ready to be picked up by impresarios to sublingual interpretive body poetry. Your voice is important, and we want to give it a home.
Good luck with the lottery and with your art!
