2011 aluCine Toronto Latin Film & Media Arts Festival, Nov 15-19


Today is the opening of the 12th annual aluCine Toronto Latin Film & Media Arts Festival. it begins with a free show of tired of counting by rosa mesa at Coffee and All That Jazz Café. It runs all day from 9am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm, and continues each day. Starting on Thursday, the festival will present a free installation called bye bye berlin, by Maria Linares & rosa mesa.

The film festival proper begins on Thursday night with a screening of Los Extraños Presagios de León Prozak (The Mysterious Presages of León Prozak). The artist will be in attendance. This will be followed by a screening of International short films in a program entitled To Record, To Retell, To React.

aluCine is a Latin, Canadian and international festival showcasing the worldʼs best in short film, video and media art with a strong focus on works made by Latin American artists living in Canada and abroad. As a festival, aluCine creates platforms of communication aimed at fostering a critical discourse among film and video makers, media artists, curators and audiences in Canada, Latin America and the world through screenings, touring exhibitions, installations, performances, artist talks and workshops.

Screenings take place at the Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Avenue. All films are screenined with English subtitles. The festival continues until Saturday, November 19.

León Prozak lends his mind to Mefistópheles for a circus act. Through a mosaic of scenes created by different visual artists, we see these animated works traverse the topics of politics, eroticism and art, as they exist in our world.

León Prozak presta su mente a Mefistópheles para un acto circense. A través de un mosaico de escenas creadas por diferentes artistas visuales, vemos que estos trabajos de animación atraviesan temas de política, erotismo y arte, tal como existen en nuestro mundo.

Facts and memories are often unreliable, details are lost and conclusions illusive. The true happenings of violent and tragic events in Mexico and Chile have been purposely obscured and altered as a result of strict military dictatorship and have left families disconnected from their own history and forever wondering about their lost loved ones.

The three works in To Record, To Retell, To React illustrate the re-emerging struggle to remember the past after the dissolve of oppressive government and the introduction of democracy.

Los hechos y los recuerdos son a menudo poco fiables, los detalles se pierden y las conclusiones ilusorias. Los acontecimientos verdaderos de hechos violentos y trágicos en México y Chile han sido deliberadamente ocultados y alterados como consecuencia de la estricta dictadura militar y ha dejado familias desconectadas de su propia historia y pensando siempre en los seres queridos que han perdido.

Las tres obras en “To Record, To Retell, To React” ilustra la lucha re-emergente de recordar el pasado después de la disolución del gobierno opresor y la introducción de la democracia.

With pride and a great pleasure, aluCine is dedicating this year’s retrospective to the world-renowned film director: Carlos Santa. Born in Colombia, Carlos Santa is a man of many talents. He is also a painter, animation artist and sculptor who has been regularly exhibiting his works around the world for decades.

This retrospective presents two films of his early phases of film creation and a new international collaboration. His unique and refined visual style will be remembered for detailed characters, excellent staging and the impressive atmosphere of his artistic world.

In terms of direction and production, The Passenger of the Night (1989) surprises the audience by its dense and almost indescribable artistic craftsmanship. This would not have been possible without the participation of people who - out of pure love to the craft and the spirit of Santa - invested many years to give animation to what was originally recorded as engravings.

The Dark Forest (1994) follows the same methodology Santa has been conducting: a combination of painting, drawing and film. This work inspired a proposal that has (finally) linked multiple generations of painters in Colombia. Santa emphasizes: “Painting and drawing in time is the central issue of animation based on visual arts. The relation of film with those old professions allowed one to propose narrative strategies using time in ways far from the conventional ones".

Both films have received critical recognition for their artistic and narrative merits. It is important to remark that in the first decade of the 21st century there was renewed activity in Colombian animation thanks to the interest of a new generation and the emergence of new technology.

The film Deep Ocean (2011) Northamerican Premiere! Is a poetic short film made by networking between Barcelona, Bogota and Los Angeles. From a thematic agreement, in this case water, and using the time difference in each country three working groups met: Arteleku from Spain Moeboius from Bogotá and group from Los Angeles led by Sheila Sofian and Juan Camilo Gonzalez.

Today we invite you to enjoy this exceptional program where the work of Colombian and Latin American animators is encouraged and celebrated.

Con orgullo dedicamos la retrospectiva de este año al renombrado y mundialmente conocido director de cine Carlos Santa. Nacido en Colombia, Carlos Santa es un hombre de muchos talentos. Es un pintor activo, un artista de la animación, y un escultor que ha exhibido regularmente sus obras y animaciones durante décadas.

La retrospectiva del director Carlos Santa de estilo visual refinado y cuyas películas son recordadas por sus personajes detallados y una impresionante puesta en escena más que perfeccionista, incluye dos películas, en representación de su primera etapa y una nueva creación cinematográfica.

En términos de realización, Isaac Ink, el pasajero de la noche (1988) Santa nos sorprendió por la densa y prácticamente indescriptible metodología de un trabajo artístico y artesanal que sería imposible sin la participación de decenas de personas que por puro amor al oficio - y al espíritu de Santa- invirtieron meses y luego años en dar animación a lo que originalmente eran grabados.

“Esta obra plantea la decadencia el hombre moderno y de la sociedad, junto con las instituciones creadas por él. La información, la ciencia, la tecnología y el poder político sirven como elementos narrativos” (Víctor Vega, miembro de Moebius; grupo que nace en Colombia con la motivación de crear un punto de encuentro para la animación en América Latina).

La Selva Oscura (1995) siguió los mismos pasos y de modo tangencial inspiró una propuesta que contó finalmente con la vinculación de múltiples generaciones de la pintura del país.

Ambas películas han recibido reconocimiento de la crítica por sus méritos artísticos y narrativos. Es importante destacar que en la primera década del siglo XXI se reanudó la actividad en la animación en Colombia gracias al interés de una nueva generación en la animación y el surgimiento de las nuevas tecnologías.

El corto Mar Profundo (2011) Premiere norteamericana, es un poético corto realizado en red entre Barcelona, Bogotá y Los Ángeles E.U.    A partir de un acuerdo temático, en este caso el agua y aprovechando la diferencia horaria en cada país se reunieron tres grupos de trabajo: Arteleku en España dirigido por Isabel Herguera y Vuk Jevremovich, en Bogotá dirigido por Carlos Santa Y Cecilia Traslaviña y en Los Ángeles dirigido por Sheila Sofian y Juan Camilo González.
