2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards - nominations


Film Independent have announced their nominees for the 27th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, or Indie Spirit Awards. Leading the pack with five nominations each were Michel Hazanavicius modern take on silent film The Artist and Jeff Nichols' moody drama Take Shelter. Both were nominated for Best Feature as well as Director and Male Lead.

Beginners, Drive, The Descendants and Martha Marcy May Marlene each followed with four nominations apiece. Each received a Best Feature nomination except for Martha Marcy May Marlene. There was a sixth nominee, however it went to the cancer-themed comedy 50/50.

Martha Marcy May Marlene did get a nod for Best First Feature. It was joined by Another EarthIn The FamilyMargin Call and Natural Selection.

The Documentary, the nominees were An African ElectionBill Cunningham New YorkThe InterruptersWe Were Here and The Redemption of General Butt Naked. With Foreign Film, only two of the selections weren't in English since they don't specify Foreign Language as the Academy does. The Foreign Film nominees were A SeparationMelancholiaShameThe Kid With a Bike and Tyrannosaur.

Margin Call was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award which is given annually to one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.

The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from 277 submissions this year and applied the following guidelines in determining the nominations: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost & individual compensation), and percentage of financing from independent sources.

Yesterday, Beginners by Mike Mills was the main winner at the New York-based Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The 27th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony will be held Feb. 25 2012 at the beach in Santa Monica and broadcast by IFC.
