Tarragon Theatre - Free Play Reading Week

The Tarragon Theatre holds its annual Play Reading Week starting tonight. All readings are free. Readings take place at 8pm except for the Sunday reading at 2:30pm.

The Tarragon invites six writers every year into its Playwrights Unit, where they develop a new play under the guidance of artistic director Richard Rose and literary manager Andrea Romaldi. The first draft is read by professional actors in January, followed by quarterly meetings to read successive drafts. The process culminates with the Play Reading Week where each play from the unit gets a public reading by professional actors.

Among the plays being read are David Yee's carried away on the crest of a wave. David Yee is currently the Artistic Director of the fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, and a very witty and talented writer. His play reading is the final event of the Play Reading Week on November 20, and is the only play reading that takes place in the afternoon at 2:30pm.

Jason Maghanoy is also a member of the fu-GEN company. The reading of his play Hangman takes place on Thursday.

The Tarragon Theatre is located at 30 Bridgman Avenue, north and east of Bathurst St. and Dupont St. in Toronto.

Play Reading Week 2011

It’s that time of year again: Tarragon’s annual Play Reading Week will run from November 14 to 20, 2011 in our upstairs studios. This is your opportunity to hear brand new plays from some of Canada’s most promising artists.

All readings will take place in the upstairs studios at 8 pm, except Sunday’s reading which takes place at 2:30pm.

Inspired by real events, Everyday Neurotics celebrates and mourns the optimistic experiment that took place in Toronto's Annex from 1966 to 1981.

Hangman

In a nineteenth century town ruptured and scarred by the effects of coal mining, a young man is hanged but does not die. Hangman traces the effects of this event on the town's psyche, and struggles with the violence that comes with keeping a community together and building a new world.

Set in the years following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, carried away on the crest of a wave is a play about causality and the interconnectedness of things. From an escort in Khao Lak, to a priest in Tamil Nadu, to a housewife in Utah, it asks, "What happens when the events that tie us together are the same that tear us apart?"
