CFC celebrates Black History Month with Pam Grier [UPDATE]
The Canadian Film Centre is celebrating Black History Month with another in its series of talks with prominent members of the black film community. Last year's talk was with Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) and before that, they featured Lee Daniels (Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire).
This year, they'll be bringing in iconic black actress Pam Grier. Her career started with Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and continued through the '70s with classic blaxploitation flicks such as Foxy Brown. She has worked steadily since then, and was especially given a boost by Quentin Tarantino with the starring role in his blaxploitation tribute film Jackie Brown.
[UPDATE] Ms. Grier had been scheduled to be joined by Jennifer Beals (Flashdance, The Book of Eli) who had her breakthrough in the '80s and recently co-starred with Grier on the television series The L Word. Due to unforeseen circumstances, however, Jennifer Beals is no longer able to attend.
The event will take place starting at 7pm on Thursday, February 2 at the Varsity Theatre in Toronto in the Manulife Centre at Bay and Bloor. It will be hosted and moderated by Toronto director Clement Virgo (Lie With Me).

Cineplex Odeon Varsity and VIP Cinemas
For more than 40 years, starting out as cinema’s ‘first female action star’, Grier has been a trailblazer for strong women on-screen. From her early starring roles in hit blaxploitation films FOXY BROWN and COFFY, to Quentin Tarantino’s JACKIE BROWN, and the acclaimed Showtime series “The L Word”, she has captivated and engaged audiences with her character portrayals. The evening will explore her inspirations for entering the film business, the choices she has made as an actor, and the challenges she has faced along the way. Grier will also draw on her personal experiences to discuss the impact of being a role model both on and off the screen.
This event is part of TD's Then and Now series, an inspiring and entertaining cultural showcase of one of Canada's prominent communities. The lineup of events includes films, concerts, exhibitions, and performances by a host of Canadian and international artists.
