In the Motion Picture category, Hugo emerged as the winner. It had been competing against Hanna, Moneyball, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Super 8. Hugo leads the nominees at the 84th Academy Awards too with eleven, mostly because the presumed favourite The Artist is a silent film and thus didn't get either of the two nominations for sound while Hugo did.
The winners for television were Too Big to Fail, Boardwalk Empire and Deadliest Catch: New Blood.
The related sound group Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) holds their Golden Reel Awards later tonight, Sunday, February 19.
Most people do not understand the difference between sound editing (the finding and/or creating of sounds including dialogue and foley) or sound mixing (the blending of recorded sounds including dialogue, music and effects). Both the Cinema Audio Society and the Academy confuse the issue further by including the Production Mixer (who together with the boom operator records the sound on set) as part of the mixing team. While the Production Mixer is crucial to filmmaking, I don't see how one decides who is awards-worthy in that position. I think it would be sensible to merge both sound categories, at least at the Oscars.
