Call for submissions: 2012 Film Pop

The POP Montreal International Music Festival has put out a call for submissions for their 11th edition of the accompanying film festival known as Film Pop.

The festival accepts features, short films and other media presentations of music-related work created after October 1, 2011. There is no entry fee.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2012. They strongly encourage early entries, however, as it will help your chances of selection.

The 11th POP Montreal International Music Festival and Film Pop takes place from September 19-23, 2012.

FILM POP CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2012

Film POP is the film and multimedia section of the POP Montreal International Music Festival, which celebrates its 11th edition from September 19-23, 2012. In addition to premieres of new music-related features, we will also be showcasing short films, slideshows, repertory curated packages and more, and we are currently accepting submissions for three components of Film POP’s program, as described below.

There is no entry fee, and arrive-by deadline is June 1, 2012. [PLEASE NOTE: the closer you get to the deadline, the less spots there will be available in the line-up] All submissions must be accompanied by a submission form. All submissions must be Montreal premieres and have been created after Oct.1, 2011. Films that have played on Canadian television, that are available for public viewing on the internet, or for sale on home video formats in Canada are NOT eligible for programming.

DOWNLOAD THE SUBMISSION FORM

1) Feature Films and Short Films
Feature film submissions (52min +) can be documentaries about specific artists, labels, musical genres, movements or current issues related to music, or they may be narrative films with a strong musical component. Short film submissions should follow these same guidelines.

For 2012, special consideration will be given to films that explore lesser-known regional music scenes
within Canada.

Feature and Short Film submissions must be sent on playable DVD or password protected link. Other
than the submission form and the DVD or link, no additional materials are required at this stage. If
selected, we will contact you for images and any other press materials.

2) Music Video Commissions
Among Film POP’s special presentations for 2012 will be a commissioned program that pairs up independent filmmakers with the music of artists performing at this year’s POP Montreal, to create original music videos that will screen as a complete program at Film POP. Presentation formats can be video, 8mm or 16mm film or 35mm slides, and can utilize a mixture of image and text, original and found images.

Media artists interested in this initiative can submit up to three examples of past work on playable DVD or password protected link, and a list of eligible musicians will be sent to the selected media artists in
July.

3) Expanded Cinema Events/Installations/Live Scores
While the budget for this section is very limited, Film POP is accepting proposals for film/video-based installations with a musical focus, expanded cinema events and live scores to be performed at the 2012 festival.

Installations: The work may consist of several parts but must work as one unified piece. Preference will be given to installations with reasonable spatial and technical requirements. Artists must submit a 250-word description of the installation, photos of any previous exhibitions of the installation, as well as an itemized list of technical and material requirements (including electrical outlets, methods and volume of amplification, screens, video/film projectors, video decks, projected shipping costs for any materials) and the dimensions of the piece.

Expanded Cinema Events: Events in which the artist’s and audience’s experiences intersect and interact with what is presented onscreen. Expanded cinema events include things where the artist must be present to physically manipulate the artwork for presentation, or that involve some sort of participatory action on the part of the audience. More than a time-based passive experience, expanded cinema events bring their viewing spaces to life. Artists must submit a 250-word description of the event, photos of any previous performances, as well as an itemized list of technical and material requirements (including electrical outlets, methods and volume of amplification, screens, video/film projectors, video decks, projected shipping costs for any materials).

Live Scores: Musicians that would like to perform an original live score to silent/experimental film
or video works must submit the proposed work(s) on a playable DVD or online link, with a CD or online links to relevant music. Artists should also provide an itemized list of technical and material requirements (including electrical outlets, cabling, methods and volume of amplification, inputs, screens, video/film projectors, video decks, projected shipping costs for any materials). Please note that budgets must include the cost of film rights/artist fees on the film(s) to be presented.

We will contact those artists whose work has been accepted for Film POP 2012 no later than July 9th,
2012. Please note that due to limited timeslots, Film POP is a very competitive program, so please send
your submissions as early as possible.

Questions regarding the submission process should be sent to film@popmontreal.com

Please send physical submissions to:
