Free event at TIFF Lightbox: Ways of Seeing (in) African Cinema
On Friday morning as part of its ongoing celebration of Black History Month, TIFF Bell Lightbox will host a free screening and panel discussion in the morning called Ways of Seeing (in) African Cinema.
The Zambian short film The Adventures of Mwansa the Great by Rungano Nyoni will be screened and be discussed by panelists including Professors Kass Banning and Marieme Lo from the University of Toronto and programmer Julie MacArthur. TIFF's co-director Cameron Bailey will act as moderator.
The film is in the language Bemba with English subtitles and lasts 24 minutes. It is told from the perspective of a young boy from a small village outside Lusaka who uses his imagination to transform his mundane reality into an adventurous journey to prove he is Mansa the Great.
The panel is begins at 10am and is tentatively scheduled to last 2 hours. It takes place at TIFF Bell Lightbox at Reitman Square, 350 King St West.

Higher Learning: Ways of Seeing (in) African Cinema

Students, faculty, and the general public are invited to join a panel of esteemed scholars and film programmers for a screening of THE ADVENTURES OF MWANSA THE GREAT, a short from the African Phantasms programme, and a discussion about contemporary film production in Africa.
In the short by director Rungano Nyoni, a young boy uses his imagination to transform his everyday reality into an exciting quest, as he journeys from his village to the copper mines to recover the magical mud necessary to repair his sister's beloved doll. Panelists will consider the film, as well as its relation to current trends in contemporary film production, film programming, and popular visual culture in Africa.
Panelists include: Professor Kass Banning (University of Toronto), Professor Marieme Lo (University of Toronto), and Julie MacArthur (programmer of African Phantasms: New African Short Films). The panel will be moderated by Co-Director of TIFF, Cameron Bailey.
The event is open to the public – tickets will be available for free on the morning of the event at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Box Office (located at 350 King St. W.)
This Higher Learning panel is part of the larger celebration of Black History Month, Music, Magic, Clash: New Voices in the African Diaspora, at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
HOW TO OBTAIN TICKETS TO THE GUEST SPEAKER EVENTS:
Faculty members and administrators can reserve blocks of tickets for their classes
Advance bookings: Only faculty members and administrators can reserve blocks of tickets for their classes. We are extending this offer to all universities and colleges, and are therefore trying to limit the number of reserved tickets to 30 per professor. We are also filling the orders on a first-come, first-served, basis so if you think you would be interested in bringing a class, it would be best to send your requests as soon as possible, to hlf@tiff.net, putting the name of the specific event in the subject heading.
Same day ticket availability: The remaining tickets for each event will be made available on a first-come, first- served basis. Tickets are limited to one per person and are available one hour before the event's start time at TIFF Bell Lightbox's Box Office, located at 350 King Street West. Faculty and administrators must show college or university faculty/staff cards for admittance.
