London Evening Standard British Film Awards - winners
The 39th London Evening Standard British Film Awards ceremony took place tonight at the London Film Museum on London’s Southbank. The gala was hosted by Stephen Mangan.
Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin scored something of an upset win over its competitors Shame, Tyrannosaur, Archipelago, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Ramsay said she was "pretty overwhelmed" and added "it was such a struggle making this movie, a lot of times I thought I'd give up."
Shame and Tyrannosaur had led with four nominations each and they both scored a win in an acting category. Michael Fassbender won Best Actor for both Shame and Jane Eyre) while Olivia Colman was named Best Actress for Tyrannosaur.
The Best Documentary went to Asif Kapadia's much-loved racing biography Senna.
John Hurt was presented with the Alexander Walker Special Award for his contribution to cinema by Stephen Frears. He will collect another Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to cinema from BAFTA this weekend at their ceremony.
The London Evening Standard British Film Awards are known to be proudly independent in their thinking. They honour British cinema and usually spread their awards around evenly. Last year, they gave Best Film to Neds while The King's Speech went away empty-handed.
The awards are selected by a panel of film critics comprised of The Evening Standard’s Derek Malcolm, Charlotte O’Sullivan and David Sexton, The Daily Telegraph’s Tim Robey, The Times’ Kate Muir and The Independent’s Anthony Quinn – along with Evening Standard Editor Geordie Greig with Arts Editor Fiona Hughes acting as chair.
