Inspired by a true story, Miss Bala shows the contrasts and calamitous results of two worlds converging. Organized crime meets beauty pageantry in Gerardo Naranjo’s thrilling new film, in which a Tijuana beauty pageant contestant, Laura (depicted marvellously by stunning newcomer Stephanie Sigman), finds her dreams and aspirations to represent her country get foiled when she unwillingly stumbles into the path of ruthless cartel operatives and corrupt officials. The film offers a spectacular and realistic look, as well as incisive commentary, into the distorted media, corruption and violence that have become so commonplace in Mexico. Premiering at Cannes under the Un Certain Regard category, this shaker of a film has been astonishing audiences worldwide as it continues its ruthless romp in theatres, and is sure to astound Montrealers as well.
“There's a wild, "Miami Blues"–like dreaminess to the movie that's addictive. If anything, it shows up exactly what "Little Miss Sunshine" lacked: plenty of ammo.”
–TIME OUT NEW YORK
“Fast and dangerous, Miss Bala is a hair-raising actioner.”
–HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
“Five stars! Gerardo Naranjo’s gobsmacking ‘Miss Bala’ is an abrasive, anything-can-happen dirge through Mexico’s dismal criminal underbelly as seen through the gorgeous peepers of the wannabe beauty queen of the title Stephanie Sigmund.”
–TIME OUT LONDON
“With the blistering firecracker that is Miss Bala, next-gen Mexican director and AFI-grad Gerardo Naranjo delivers on the promise of such well-respected early pics as "Drama/Mex" and "I'm Gonna Explode," revealing them as dry runs for this "Scarface"-scary depiction of south-of-the-border crime run amok.”

In an attempt to exonerate a wrongly convicted man, two young Mexican attorneys set out to make a documentary that would expose the contradictions of a judicial system that presumes suspects guilty until proven innocent. Once-banned, this documentary became the highest-grossing documentary in the history of Mexican cinema, thanks in large part to its honest look into the gaps created by a faulty system and the struggles of the wrongfully accused.
“A nightmarish journey into Mexico's legal system that seems lifted from the pages of Franz Kafka.”
-THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
"A compelling human story of righteous indignation, heroism, and international importance"
-VARIETY
"One of the most buzzed about Mexican films in years."

A young Basque-Mexican painter attempts to overcome the sudden death of his beloved girlfriend by gallivanting across borders. By traveling between Mexico City and the Sonora desert, he seeks his roots and emotional stability. As he comes upon the ocean, his quest morphs into a search for a giant squid. This majestic and poetic film lets the viewer into the mind of the 28 year-old Sebastian, who is sure to identify with its subject and fall under its charm.

Shocked by her husband’s sudden departure, Teresa embarks on a mission to find out what happened. Instead of finding answers, her mission becomes a journey through the streets and homes of the people she meets. Blending fiction and documentary, her wanderings portray the town and its inhabitants. Constructed through characters and the village’s corporeal landscape, we drift with Teresa through spaces and people suffering the effects of lost loved ones, broken promises, disconnection and eternal longing.
“A distinctive voice from fertile Mexican soil!”
