2012 Toronto Nepali Film Festival

3rd Toronto Nepali Film Festival

Toronto, ON: The Third Toronto Nepali Film Festival (TNFF) will be held on Saturday March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day), 2012 in Toronto at Innis Town Hall, University of Toronto, 2 Sussex Ave (at St. George Street).

The one-day festival will showcase nine extraordinary Nepali films from Canada, Nepal and the US. The program will start at 1:30 pm and end at 10:15 pm. The annual festival is organized with the goal of promoting Nepal’s rapidly emerging and vibrant independent filmmaking industry and adding a distinctive voice to Toronto’s cultural landscape.

The festival programme includes fiction, documentary and shorts. Identity is a short that voices stories of identity and migration from select members of Nepali and Filipino community in Toronto. Buwega Maanatuna (The Spinner of Flights) is a touching film in Newari language (spoken by Newars, who are indigenous to Kathmandu Valley) about a kite spindle maker. Kushee Bhaneko (A Thing Called Happiness) is a beautiful short in which Nepalis from different walks of life define the meaning of happiness. Journey to Yarsa is a documentary about a seasonal migration in western Nepal, where thousands of villagers flock the high altitude Himalayan meadows in search of Yarsa Gumba
(cordyceps). Hanuman Airlines follows Babu and Lakpa, winners of National Geographic’s 2012 People’s Choice Adventurers of the Year as they make their ultimate descent from the top of Mount Everest on a paraglider. Saving Dolma brings up the abuse of domestic workers in Kuwait by following the case of Dolma, a Nepali domestic worker as she awaits her death sentence. Ma Kushi Chu (I am Happy) is a thoughtful fiction film about two idiosyncratic urban characters, their meeting and the fleeting moments that lead to it. Team Nepal is a lively documentary that follows a soccer team from Birgunj (a bustling town bordering India) travelling to Bihar, India to participate in a soccer tournament. Buried in Tears is a passionate and groundbreaking film that follows a band called Stop Crackdown in South Korea whose members are migrant workers from Burma, Indonesia, Nepal and Korea. The band sings their hearts out against the inhuman immigration policies of the world’s fifteenth largest economy, South Korea. As it is reflective from the timely narratives of this year’s film programme, Nepalis are on the move, crossing geographies, boundaries and borders.

The films will be screened in three sessions. Session A begins at 1:30 pm and will feature Identity, Buwega Maanatuna (The Spinner of Flights), Kushee Bhaneko (A Thing Called Happiness) and Journey to Yarsa. Session B starts at 4 pm and will include Hanuman Airlines and Saving Dolma. Session C starts at 7 pm and will feature Ma Kushi Chu (I am Happy), Team Nepal and Buried in Tears. Filmmakers will be in attendance. There will be a food stall selling delicious Nepali and Tibetan cuisine. Audience Choice Award and Jury Choice Award will be announced at the end of the festival.
