John Greyson: Impatient, Mar 30 – Apr 5
Tonight, a multi-venue retrospective of iconoclastic New Queer Cinema filmmaker John Greyson entitled John Greyson: Impatient kicks off at TIFF Bell Lightbox with a screening of Zero Patience. The 1993 AIDS musical will be preceded by his short pieces ADS Epidemic and Roy & Silo's Starter Home.
Other works presented as part of John Greyson: Impatient include Carte Blanche: Edward II, White Money, Fig Trees, The Sixth Room, Motet for Amplified Voices and Lilies.
The retrospective is being held in conjunction with the release of a DVD box set and a new monograph honouring his work. The launch event takes place before the screening and is free to Zero Patience ticket holders.
The launch and retrospective series is jointly presented by TIFF, Vtape, the Art Gallery of Ontario, This Is Not a Reading Series, and Arsenal Pulp Press. It is interesting and pleasing to see that it appears TIFF and Greyson and put the controversy of 2009 behind them, when Greyson withdrew his documentary short film Covered and joined a protest against the festival.
The series continues until April 5.

John Greyson's passionate, luminescent tale of love and betrayal from the celebrated play by Marcel Marc-Bouchard won the Genie for Best Picture.
Launched to international recognition in 1993 with his provocative AIDS musical Zero Patience, Toronto filmmaker John Greyson established himself as a leading figure in the loosely defined New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s. In an extensive body of work that ranges from documentary and historical fiction to filmed operas and experimental video art, Greyson employs Brechtian methods to refashion well-worn cinematic tropes as instruments of social and political activism, engaging the audience critically while never forgetting the power of pathos, humour and sensuality in telling his stories of forbidden love and struggles for recognition and liberation.
Join us to celebrate the release of John Greyson's DVD box set and a new book about his classic feature examining the truth about the origin of AIDS, Zero Patience. Noah Cowan, Artistic Director of TIFF Bell Lightbox, moderates a discussion about the film with filmmaker John Greyson, Zero Patience book authors Wendy Gay Pearson and Susan Knabe, and Vtape's Wanda Vanderstoop. Featuring an introduction by TINARS' Artistic Director Marc Glassman, the launch event is followed by a screening of the film Zero Patience.
