2012 Images Festival, April 12–22
25th Anniversary Images Festival. "Expanding cinema since 1988."
Opening weekend starting this Thursday (+ bonus screening on Wednesday!)
The 2012 Images Festival programming showcases vanguard contemporary media-based artworks. Located in 20+ venues across Toronto, the festival presents screenings, live performances, online projects, gallery exhibitions as well as artist talks, gallery tours and parties. The Images Festival crosses international boundaries again this year with 120+ works by artists from 26 countries, as well as local and national artists, students and accomplished artists. The Images Festival screens and exhibits a wide range of works from many disciplines – everything from formal materialist experiments to innovative documentaries, from film with live performance to works which address a range of issues from the political to the personal and everything in between!
PRE-FESTIVAL FREE BONUS SCREENING: Lewis Klahr's collage feature "The Pettifogger"
In association with The Free Screen series at TIFF Cinematheque, we are delighted to present this special free pre-festival bonus screening with American collage-artist Lewis Klahr's new feature The Pettifogger. Klahr has been making films for over 30 years, re-animating found objects into rich reveries of pop culture dream-narratives. His filmmaking is one of paper ephemera, comic-book cutouts and marked playing cards. The textures of his found material become even more alive with Klahr's recent turn towards 30 photography: the coloured half-tone dots of mid-century printing processes and the surface quality of aging paper become vividly foregrounded, a mixture of Lichtenstein and Frankenstein. Klahr's longest piece to date is an elliptical narrative of a year in the life of an American gambler and con man (the "petty fugger" of the title), circa 1963. A narcotic mixture of noir-driven intrigue and brooding, contemplative passages driven by strong mood music and found dialogue from radio potboilers, The Pettifogger is "an abstract crime film and, like many other crime films involving larceny, a sensorial exploration of the virulence of unfettered capitalism. An impressionistic collage film, culled from a wide variety of image and sound sources that fully exploits the hieroglyphic essence of cutouts to ponder what appropriation and stealing have in common." – Lewis Klahr
Wednesday April 11, 7 PM @ TIFF Cinematheque, 350 King Street West

OPENING NIGHT GALA: Renowned Ghanian/UK filmmaker John Akomfrah (in person!), co-founder of London's seminal Black Audio Film Collective presents his latest feature The Nine Muses, a documentary meditation on migration and landscape. With stunning shots of Alaskan shores and audio filled with moving readings, from Homer to Dante to T.S. Eliot; and the music of Arvo Pärt and India's Gundecha Brothers, Akomfrah has created a haunting journey through myth and landscape, a self-described "Proustian attempt" to suggest the idea of migration. The Nine Muses (*still above) opens the 25th festival with its Canadian premiere (Thursday April 12, 6:45 PM @ The Royal); http://www.imagesfestival.com/calendar.php?event_id=757&month=y

A Place in the World, is a program of four films that reflect on distinct structures and environments: from a methadone clinic in Vancouver¹s Downtown East Side to a live-in care facility in the English countryside for adults with learning disabilities.
