2012 Montreal Film Festival on the Environment, Apr 22–May 3
The 4th Festival de Films de l’Environnement de Montréal (Montreal Film Festival on the Environment) got off to an early start with yesterday's screening of Koyaanisqatsi. But it officially begins today, Earth Day. This year's theme is Oil: Blessing or Curse?
Koyaanisqatsi screens again this afternoon, while tonight's screenings will be The Big Fix about the BP Oil spill of two years ago, and También la lluvia (Even the Rain) which dramatizes the true story of “Water War” of Cochabamba in 2000 when a corporate consortium of Bechtel and others acquired the rights to Bolivia's water and citizens could not even collect rain water without payment.
Other films screening during the festival include Black Tide: Voices from the Gulf, Petropolis, White Water Black Gold, The Pipe and Surviving Progress. Classic films being shown include Giant, There Will Be Blood and Night of the Living Dead.
The festival continues to May 3 at Cinéma du Parc, 3575, av. du Parc.

OIL: A BLESSING OR A CURSE?
April 22nd to May 3rd

In collaboration with Le Festival International du film sur l’Environnement de Paris en Île de France.
April 22nd is simultaneously Earth Day in Quebec and, ironically, the second anniversary of the great oil spill disaster caused by the sinking of the BP operated offshore oil platform Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico.
Many of our selected films feature oil as their main theme. As a symbol of the prodigious economic development of the past century, this form of energy is central to the day-to-day functioning of our societies. But as we enter a new century marked by galloping globalization as well as an unprecedented economic and environmental crisis we are compelled to rethink our dependence on this so called “black gold”. Meanwhile, demand is growing as the emerging economies of China, India and Brazil come on stream. However, easily attainable reserves are dwindling and peak oil may have been reached. Increasingly hazardous production sites often cause ecological disasters as with Alberta’s tar sands or the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Furthermore, the quest for oil leads to bloody wars like the one in Iraq, while frantically increased usage leads to global warming. Oil is at the center of the manifold crises affecting our civilization. Is oil a blessing or a curse? The answer is in our court.
