2012 South Australian Screen Awards – winners

The Media Resource Centre – South Australia’s centre for screen culture development – held their 13th Annual South Australian Screen Awards (SASAs) tonight at the Mercury Cinema in Adelaide.

Anthony Maras' The Palace about a family’s struggles during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus was the night's big winner with six awards from its leading seven nominations. Maras himself won for Best Direction, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing, and was co-winner for Best Film and Best Drama. It also picked up the award for Cinematography. Its only miss was for Sound Design.

No other film won multiple awards. The Best Documentary prize went to Ball of Light by Sam Collins. Chad Leader's Steak Knife won Best Comedy while Sometimes the Stars by Luke Jurevicius won Best Animation. The Best Non-Narrative Film award went to A Dance in the Garden Reminds Me by Gemma Soloman.

The award for Best Feature Film went to Sophie Hyde and Matthew Bate's Shut Up Little Man. It played at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.

SASA 2012 awarded jury prizes to cinematographer Sam King (Young Filmmaker of the Year) and producer Kirsty Stark (MRC Emerging Producer) for their outstanding creative contributions as up-and-coming South Australian filmmakers. The People’s Choice Award was presented to Adam Carter's I Am Orpheus.
