2012 Toronto Summer Music Festival, July 17-Aug 4
The 7th Toronto Summer Music Festival gets underway tonight with a recital by award-winning Quebecois pianist André Laplante. He will perform Bach/Busoni’s Organ Toccata; several works of Ravel: Oiseaux tristes; La vallée des cloches; Sonatine; Morel’s Deux etudes de sonorité; and Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage, Première année Suisse (selections). The gala evening includes a post-concert champagne reception for the audience, and a chance to meet Mr. Laplante.
Other featured performers and ensembles performing during the festival include The Borodin String Quartet; Gerald Finley & Stephen Ralls; The Zukerman Chamber Players featuring Pinchas Zukerman; The Gryphon Trio; National Youth Orchestra of Canada; Cecilia String Quartet with Georgy Tchaidze; and The Nash Ensemble with Colin Ainsworth.
There will be a series at Hart House called Friday Late Nights, and Mentors & Fellows Concerts performed jointly by the mentors and participants in the Academy. Outreach Concerts take place throughout the city and are free of charge.
The festival also hosts a series of masterclasses in which the public can attend the instruction of some already-advanced performers being tutored by seasoned professionals. This is always enlightening and you can immediately hear the difference that small changes can make.
The 7th Toronto Summer Music Festival continues to August 4 at Koerner Hall and various locations around Toronto.

Ravel: La vallée des cloches
Ravel: Sonatine
Morel: Deux études de sonorité
Liszt: Années de pèlerinage, Première année: Suisse (selections)
Colourful and atmospheric impressions by Ravel and Liszt anchor master pianist André Laplante’s Opening Night recital. Ravel drew on his imagination for these portraits of sad birds and a valley echoing with bells, while Liszt gathered his picturesque sketches during the ‘year of pilgrimage’ that he spent traveling through Switzerland. Ravel’s neo-classical Sonatine, and Busoni’s inventive transcription of a mighty Bach organ toccata complete the program.
Join us after the concert for a champagne reception with the artist!
