2012 Golden Reel Award – winner announced
Seventh Golden Win for Producer Don Carmody
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents the 2012 Cineplex Golden Reel Award to the action thriller Resident Evil: Retribution, which grossed over $5.4 million in Canada in 2012.
“Resident Evil: Retribution has surpassed the success of the previous Resident Evil franchise outings,” says Helga Stephenson, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “The Academy loudly applauds this sensational Canadian box office story,” she adds.
The Cineplex Golden Reel Award is presented annually to the Canadian film that earns the highest domestic box office in that year. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) also garnered Golden Reel Awards. This year the Academy will present the Cineplex Golden Reel Award at the first ever Canadian Screen Awards.
In Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice fights alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead.
Resident Evil: Retribution, was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, in state of-the art 3D and produced by Don Carmody. Entertainment One‘s Alliance team has distributed all five Resident Evil films in the series. Resident Evil: Retribution is now available on DVD or VOD.
This award marks the seventh time Don Carmody has been a producer of a Golden Reel award-winning film (including Meatballs in 1980, Porkys in 1983, Johnny Mnemonic in 1996 and The Art of War in 2000).
Resident Evil: Retribution has grossed approximately $250 million worldwide (including China, which just opened), while the franchise has grossed over $930 million, or close to $1 billion, at the global box office.
Resident Evil: Retribution has garnered 3 Canadian Screen Awards nominations including Achievement in Sound Editing for Stephen Barden, Steve Baine, Kevin Banks, Alex Bullick, Jill Purdy, Achievement in Visual Effects for Dennis Berardi, Jason Edwardh, Matt Glover, Trey Harrell, Leann Harvey, Jo Hughes, Ethan Lee, Scott Riopelle, Eric Robinson, Kyle Yoneda and Achievement in Costume Design for Wendy Partridge.
