She is herself a graduate of the UofT's Faculty of Music (as is fellow Toronto-based film composer Mychael Danna who just this weekend won a Golden Globe Award). Barber is currently doing a residency as the Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Film Composition.
She has an extensive background that includes film, theatre and commissioned work for soloists and ensembles. She has twice won Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Original Score.
The free lecture takes place at 7:30 pm at Walter Hall, in the Faculty of Music (located in the building behind the former Planetarium).
Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Film Composition
Lesley Barber is one of Canada’s most prolific musical composers. Lesley has composed, orchestrated and conducted award-winning music for film, television, theatre and concert hall. Lesley graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s Degree in Music Composition where she won several young composer awards. Lesley’s career started scoring music for the Toronto theatre scene and worked on over 20 theatre productions. Notable works included Unidentified Human Remains, and The True Nature of Love by Brad Fraser, and Love and Anger by George F. Walker. She received two Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Original Score.
As a classical composer Barber has been commissioned by artists such as pianist Eve Egoyan, The Canadian Electronic Ensemble, Hemispheres Orchestra, and serving as Young Composer in Residence at the Festival of the Sound, and Winnipeg’s New Music Festival. Works include Long White Line (for orchestra), Rhythmic Voodoo (percussion and electronica). Music for a Lonely Zamboni (piano trio) and Marshland (string quartet). Barber composed for Yo-Yo Ma for the television series Yo-Yo Ma: Inspired by Bach.
Lesley’s most recent film scores include Mary Harron’s Moth Diaries, Boaz Yakin’s Death in Love (starring Adam Brody, Josh Lucas and Jacqueline Bisset), additional music and orchestration for Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (starring Abigail Breslin, Julia Ormand and Chris O’Donnel), and HBO’s A Child’s Garden of Poetry (with Liam Neeson, Claire Danes, Philip Seymour Hoffman).
Other film credits include the Oscar-winning You Can Count On Me (starring Mark Ruffalo and Laura Linney), Mira Nair's Golden Globe-winning Hysterical Blindness (starring Uma Thurman and Gena Rowlands), A Price Above Rubies (starring Renee Zellweger), Mansfield Park, the Emmy-Award winning Yo-Yo Ma: Six Gestures, When Night Is Falling, The History of Luminous Motion, Marion Bridge (starring Molly Parker), Comeback Season (starring Ray Liotta), Victoria Day (starring Mark Rendall) and A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (directed by Wayne Wang).
She is also the composer for Maurice Sendak’s Emmy-award winning television series Little Bear, and Seven Little Monsters.
She is currently working on the mini-series The Heretics which will air in 2013.
