Golden Globe Awards 2013 – winners

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association held the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the event and were quite good in their opening monoloque as well as throughout the night.

The big winners of the night were Ben Affleck's Argo and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. Argo won for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director. Les Miserables won three prizes total for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) for Hugh Jackman, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Anne Hathaway.

Django Unchained also won two awards. Quentin Tarantino was a surprise winner for Best Screenplay, and Christoph Waltz again won Best Supporting Actor as he did three years ago for Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

Jodie Foster received the Cecil B. DeMille Award and gave a very memorable speech. Some found it mystifying and muddled, but I thought it was heartfelt and moving. For some reason, the audio went silent

Canadian Mychael Danna, an old classmate of mine at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, was the winner of Best Original Score for his work on Life of Pi.

The television side was dominated by the Sarah Palin dramatization Game Change and the anti-terrorism drama Homeland. Each took three awards.

Other memorable moments included presentations by Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell, an introduction of the movie Argo by real-life Tony Mendez (who seemed stiff, nervous, and stood too far from the microphone), Glenn Close feigning drunkenness, and a surprise appearance by former President Bill Clinton to introduce the presidential-themed movie Lincoln.
