Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards 2013 – winners
The Cinema Audio Society presented the 49th Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2012 last night at the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. KTLA Entertainment Reporter Sam Rubin returned again this year to host the ceremony.
The top award for Motion Picture – Live Action went to Les Miserables for its complex and demanding requirements arising from director Tom Hooper's ambitious goal of recording the singing live, and without any pre-recorded tracks or accompaniment.
Typically, musicals are filmed with lip-synching and all of the music is from pre-recorded tracks. Hooper had them sing live to a keyboard accompanist, allowing them to be more free with their timing and acting, with excellent results including Anne Hathaway's famed rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream." Microphones were placed on both shoulders of the actors and removed digitally afterwards. Orchestral accompaniment was added after editing.
The winner in the Motion Picture – Animated category was the Disney film Brave.
The CAS Career Achievement Award was presented to Production Sound Mixer Chris Newman and the CAS Filmmaker Award went to director Jonathan Demme.
