This year, the Images Festival inhabits Cinecycle, the iconic coach house behind 401 Richmond, as our post-screening lounge, keeping Images connected to its “underground” roots! Join us at Cinecycle for drinks, food and dancing every night of the festival. During the day, visit our public Mediatheque and Images Festival Bookstore at Urbanspace Gallery on the ground floor of 401 Richmond.
OPENING + CLOSING NIGHT LIVE EVENTS AT ST. ANNE’S CHURCH!
A highlight of this year’s festival is a dynamic collaboration between the visceral yet ambient sounds of Juno Award winning Montreal electronic artist, Tim Hecker, and the transformative lens of innovative filmmaker Robert Todd at the gorgeous St. Anne’s Anglican Church on Gladstone Ave. Adorned with murals by the Group of Seven, this 1907 Byzantine domed church will be the backdrop for an incredible intersection of sight and sound. Opening this special LIVE IMAGES event are the lush audio and visuals of SlowPitch, who will be presenting the Toronto debut of his live piece Emoralis. Taking place Thursday, April 11 @ 8 PM at this unique venue, the show will be followed by our annual Opening Night Party next door in the Workman Arts Theatre, St Anne's Parish Hall.
The incredible St. Anne’s church will also be the location for our Closing Night Gala on Saturday April 20 @ 8 PM. To wrap up the festival, Images has invited Chicago free-jazz drummer Hamid Drake and local baritone saxophonist David Mottto lend their improvisational and interpretive sounds to the evocative images of Corredor, a video work by local artist Alexandra Gelis.
2013 CANADIAN ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
This year’s Images Festival 2013 Canadian Artist Spotlight falls on Vancouver artist Althea Thauberger. Often addressing concepts and themes concerning nature and its representation in popular culture, Althea Thauberger’s solo spotlight program A Memory Lasts Forever screens Friday, April 12 @ 6:30 PM. Concurrently, as part of our OFF SCREEN program, her experimental documentary installation Marat Sade Bohnice is now on view until Sunday, May 5 at The Power Plant.
ON SCREEN– FEATURE FILMS
This year’s ON SCREEN program brings together local and international filmmakers representing a variety of cultural communities - among them First Nations, Filipino, Ecuadorian, Japanese and Cameroonian - in a series of feature length works and Images’ trademark curated shorts series. Artistic Director Kate MacKay and Programmer Elwood Jimmy have selected a feast of innovative new works, and we are delighted to screen once again our entire ON SCREEN program at the AGO’s Jackman Hall.
Part of the emerging Filipino New Wave, John Torres’ magical feature film Lukas nino (Lukas the Strange) is a dreamlike coming of age story, beautifully shot on 35mm with sequences in smeary old VHS video. In the midst of a film crew descending upon a small town to shoot a movie, 13-year-old Lukas is confronted by the disappearance of his father, who is rumoured to be a tikbalang – half man, half horse.
Joining our jury this year is the prolific filmmaker Jean-Marie Teno, who will also be screening his newest work, Leaf in the Wind on Saturday April 13 @ 6 PM. Jean-Marie Teno’s film uncovers the forgotten chapters of Cameroonian colonial history and the personal narratives affected by such, by revisiting an evocative interview with Ernestine Ouadie, the daughter of independence freedom fighter Ernest Ouadie.
Cleaning your house is one of the most private things you can do. Canadian filmmaker Adele Horne sheds light on this invisible labour that makes up a huge part of our lives, in a series of portraits of people cleaning house. Screening just in time for spring-cleaning on Thursday, April 18 @ 9 PM.
Your Day Is My Night documents residents of shift-bed apartments in New York’s Chinatown. Screening Friday, April 19 @ 6:30 PM, Lynne Sachs’ film transforms the bed into a stage, revealing a collective history of Chinese immigrants in the United States and the basic human need for a place to sleep.
Other exciting features include David Wojnarowicz’s recently transferred 30-minute Super 8 film Beautiful People. We are also thrilled to bring you a sneak preview of Jane Gillooly’s feature film Suitcase of Love and Shame, which intimately chronicles an adulterous love affair from the 1960s.
ON SCREEN - CURATED SHORTS PROGRAMS
On screen ignites with Images unique collection of curated shorts programs, bringing together works by 60+ artists from around the world. Special Guest curator Elena Duque blurs the boundaries of abstraction and decorative arts in the mind blowing images of Patterns, screening Friday, April 19 @ 8:30 PM.
In mmNemonic DVices, a collection of recent film and video from Toronto artists explore and organize memory by invoking the past through found and appropriated footage. Curated by Nick Benidt, Julian Carrington, Blake Williams this local program screens Saturday, April 13 @ 10:30 PM.
Borders/Bodies: International Student Showcase brings together an array of student artists exploring the machinations of nature and culture. Curated by Zoe Heyn-Jones(Ryerson University), Cameron Moneo (York University), Taimaz Moslemian (OCAD University) screening Monday, April 15 @ 6:30 PM.
LIVE IMAGES: PERFORMANCE + PROJECTIONS
The Images Festival’s ever-expanding LIVE IMAGES programs explore the traditions and boundaries of projection-enhanced performance - from silent films with live musical accompaniment, to performance-based multimedia projects, to full-scale theatrical productions.
In celebration of our post-screening lounge taking place at Cinecycle the Images Festival and Wavelength have invited three of the city’s best bands to play along with treasures from the film collection of proprietor Martin Heath. Toronto jazz quartet the Lina Allemano Four, Eucalyptus and Del Bel will provide the live musical scores to these rare films Tuesday, April 16 @ 9 PM.
Part animated rock opera, part love letter to her mother's slowly disappearing poster business, Dusty Stacks of Mom: The Poster Project invents a new hybrid form: the animated personal rockumentary! Taking place Friday, April 19 @ 10:30 PM, the piece adopts the musical structure of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and will be presented with live vocals by filmmaker Jodie Mack at Cinecycle.
The Images Festival has invited artists Duane Linklater and Tanya Lukin Linklater to create a brand new project whose presence in both our OFF SCREEN and LIVE IMAGES programs exemplifies our vision of the Images Festival as an inter-disciplinary arts festival. The artists will respond to two seminal films with a new work composed of dance, sound and image. From April 15-19 in the MOCCA Main Space, the artists will be in open rehearsal, culminating in a final LIVE performance on Saturday April 20 from 4 to 6 PM.

OFF SCREEN–GALLERIES & INSTALLATIONS
Our OFF SCREEN program presents media-based installations by Canadian and international artists at 15 local galleries, artist-run centres and public locations with pop-up galleries at MOCCA, Prefix, Unpack and Scrap Metal presenting new works by Laure Prouvost, Jean Paul Kelly and Andrea Geyer.
What do you get when you bring together turntables, contact microphones and ANTS?! Ecuadorian artist Kuai Shen’s installation Oh!m1gas: biomimetic stridulation environment does exactly that as the everyday life and activities of an ant colony emerge as an incredible soundscape and media art installation. Opening at InterAccess on Saturday, April 13 @ 2 PM, and on view throughout the festival.
The Images Festival has invited Greg Staats to explore his process of reconnecting with a traditional Iroquois restorative aesthetic in an artist residency, master class and artist’s talk, in collaboration with Trinity Square Video opening Saturday, April 13 @ 1 PM.
On view through the festival at Mercer Union, Images is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Paul Sietsema in Canada. This exhibition will foreground the 16-mm film Telegraph, monumental drawings and new previously unseen works.
iFPOD
The Toronto Images Festival continues to push the boundaries of the cinema experience with our online video dissemination project iFpod, which enables audiences to experience the festival remotely and investigate it through documentations of performances, interviews with filmmakers, talks and much more.
