In this vast range of formulas and formats, you’re guaranteed to discover a wealth of hidden treasures, gems of the next generation and essential legends, thousands of musicians invited from some thirty countries, playing electric guitars alongside balafons, double bass next to turntables, in intimate musical rendezvous and large-scale concerts in the heart of downtown, from noon into the wee hours… Yes, it’s free music at its absolute summer best!
Three major free outdoor Grands événements
The TD Stage on the Place des Festivals hosts three absolutely essential massive outdoor events to gather and delight Fest fans at 9:30 p.m. Feist gets the ball rolling on Friday, June 28 in the TD Grand Opening Event in collaboration with SiriusXM. At the midpoint of the festival, Tuesday, July 2, brilliant French songwriter-composer-producer-manager and DJ Wax Tailor ignites the party. After burning up the Métropolis in 2010 (opening for Caravan Palace) and L’Astral last year with his invigorating and cinematic blast of orchestral trip-hop and hip-hop, this leading light of the international electronica scene invites in an array of super special guests: Jennifer Charles, Charlotte Savary, Mattic, A.S.M. and Voice. On Sunday, July 7, the 34th edition of the Festival closes under the colours of Mali with 2 of its most brilliant stars, Amadou & Mariam, our Antonio Carlos-Jobim Award honorees this year! The Rio Tinto Alcan Closing Event welcomes this magical, vibrant duo, who throw a party wherever they appear and unleash a refreshing joie de vivre as powerful as their funky rhythms. Their irresistible musical chemistry reaches full potency on their 7th album, Folila, which they’ll unveil here accompanied by another luminous figure from the inexhaustible Malian music scene: Fatoumata Diawara.
The Festival, stage by stage
TD stage (Place des Festivals)
In addition to these three Grands événements, the Place des Festivals welcomes the prestigious Performances TD series at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Get ready for absolute crowd favourites The Barr Brothers (June 29), who promise a moment of musical magic at the crossroads of folk, rock and blues. On July 1, 30-piece orchestra Mucca Pazza land with their musical hybrid, guaranteed to get the party started! On July 3, Nick Waterhouse makes his first visit to the Festival with the songs from his debut album, Time’s All Gone, which revives the golden age of R&B.On the same stage, the action kicks off at 6 p.m. with the artists of the Gammes TD series. Effendi’s explosive JazzLab assembles Rémi Bolduc, Alexandre Côté, Frank Lozano, Aron Doyle, Richard Gagnon, John Roney, Alain Bédard and Isaiah Ceccarelli and returns to the Festival on June 29 to mark its 10th anniversary. Then, June 30, the Brad Turner Quartet, celebrated for their creativity and improvisational sensibility, make their Fest debut. On July 4, we welcome pianist and Oscar Peterson protégé Robi Botos, who’s blazed a trail between blues, jazz and the Romany heritage of his ancestors and confirmed his ranking among the leading figures of the next jazz generation by winning the 2012 TD Grand Jazz Award.
Rio Tinto Alcan stage (corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance)
On Ste. Catherine St., the super-accessible Rio Tinto Alcan Stage invites fans to the Soirées jazzy Rio Tinto Alcan series at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. On July 3, Kellylee Evans, who charmed us all with Nina, her 2011 Juno-winning tribute album to Nina Simone, presents a turn towards hip-hop and R&B with her recent album, I Remember When. On July 5, French singer Laïka follows in the wake of the grand dames of jazz vocal, presenting a song recital of great finesse, revisiting standards with a subtle emotion. The following evening (July 6), robust Cajun quartet Lost Bayou Ramblers, proud standard-bearers of the Louisiana scene, present their latest album Mammoth Waltz, steeped in rock energy.
Grande-Place stage, Complexe Desjardins
With summer holidays barely begun, it’s time for the entire family to head back into class with La Petite école du jazz (Little School of Jazz), presented by Rio Tinto Alcan every day at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., from June 28 to July 7! Les Zélèves, a vocal harmony quintet led by Victor-Jacques Ménard, along with James Gelfand and his quartet, and the festival mascot, Ste-Cat, are delighted to bring jazz to young and old alike with this dynamic, interactive and fun-filled musical initiation, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! Immediately afterwards, at 3 p.m. on June 29-30 and July 6, families can keep the festivities going and stretch their legs to music at the Musique en famille avec les ateliers Samajam, a playful percussion workshop presented by Rio Tinto Alcan, principal partner in the Samajam stay-in-school project since 2011.
Loto-Québec stage (Parterre of the Maison symphonique de Montréal, corner of De Montigny and Clark)
Head over to the essential Spectacles blues Loto-Québec series at 7 p.m. for blues, blues and more… rock! On July 1, the Festival welcomes Canadian guitarist David Gogo, passionate defender of the blues twice named Guitarist of the Year by the Maple Blues Awards, here to unveil an album due this summer. On July 3, fiery blues singer Angel Forrest promises a hot, hot evening featuring her brand new single, Mother Tongue Blues. To close out the series with a very special shot of rock’n’roll July 7, the Porn Flakes roll out a triple-bill devoted to the Rolling Stones (which continues in the Soirées blues Loto-Québec series): a set of ’60s hits, the legendary Exile on Main Street album in its entirety (9 p.m.) and an overview of the ’70s and beyond (11 p.m.).Les Soirées blues Loto-Québec take command of the night at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. with the most talented ambassadors of the genre. The human incarnation of practically the entire history of Québécois blues from the ’70s forward, singer-guitarist Bob Walsh carries his ever-blazing blues torch in July 2, testifying songs from his latest album, There’s a Story Here… French harmonica blower and singer Nico Wayne Toussaint, a devotee of Chicago blues, hits the Festival for the first time July 4 with a repertoire of mainly originals, including a couple in French. The following night (July 5), get set for a refreshing duo from the west coast, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, Shawn “The Harpoonist” Hall and Matthew “The Axe Murderer” Rogers, and raw, primal, feverish blues that transcends time to cross the ancient icons (Robert Johnson) with the modern slingers (Jack White).
Bell Stage (Clark North esplanade)
The mercury should be at the perfect level for the Tropiques Bell series at 8 p.m.! Twenty years after her first Festival visit, grand dame Lorraine Klaasen comes in June 29 to share her most recent creation, Tribute to Miriam Makeba, Juno winner for Best World Music Album this year. On July 5, Christine Salem, maloya singer from Ile de La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, brings a new album, Salem tradition, in which her deep, warm voice is marvelously suited to the Indian Ocean blues she lays over a bed of diabolical rhythms. The series concludes July 7 with the Fest debut of world music discovery Fatoumata Diawara and Fatou, her spellbinding acoustic guitar album weaving traditional Wassoulou chants laced with modern rhythms and tinged with a jazz/blues ambience.
The evening rolls on with the Groove Bell series at 10 p.m., when Fest fans can enjoy the first ever Festival visit by versatile English saxophonist Soweto Kinch (June 29), veteran jazzman and hip-hop star, armed with his new album, The Legend of Mike Smith. On July 3, Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band serve up their magic potion mixing funk, soul, calypso, Afrobeat and spoken word as shaken up on their latest album, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello. Multilingual/multicultural supergroup Nomadic Massive fire up the party July 6 with songs blending soul, reggae and Afro-Caribbean rhythms from their latest EP, Any Sound.
CBC/Radio-Canada Stage (Clark South esplanade)
As evening falls, the Brunantes CBC/Radio-Canada series lights up the stage at 7 p.m., presenting many of the musicians nominated for the TD Grand Jazz Award. Among them, 2013 Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada winner Jérôme Beaulieu lands on June 30 with his repertoire of contempo jazz peppered with rock and pop, and with songs from a new album on the way. On July 4, Quetango Quartet fuse tango, jazz and progressive rock and unveil material from their brand new album, Musica Urbana. One of the most brilliant young pianists on the Canadian scene, John Roney follows July 5 with pieces from his 3rd album, St-Henri, reaching beyond the realm of post-bop to embrace modern sounds.
Come on down at 9 p.m. for concerts in the Rendez-vous series. On June 30, Canadian composer and saxophonist Becky Noble, named “Best New Talent” at the 2012 Jazz en rafale festival, heads in with her first album of original material, Salish Folk Song. Finally back after a lovely performance in 2009, Japan’s Nobuki Takamen presents recent album Three Wishes on July 4, gilded with lyrical, melodious, fluid jazz compositions. The series concludes July 7 with Francis et ses peintres, led by fantasist French singer Katerine, unveiling pop songs joyously jazzily remodeled, as found on their recent release, 52 reprises dans l’espace.
Lounge Heineken(Parc des Festivals, corner of De Bleury St. and De Maisonneuve Blvd.)
In the Lounge Heineken series, fans can bask in the sounds of two concerts, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., while enjoying a cocktail. On June 29, Jordan Officer, master of the 6-string, invites us to an intimate rendezvous before heading off to New York, playing songs from his new, bluesier EP. Veteran bluesman Martin Goyette, known for his super-unique voice, blows in July 3 with the blues, funk, rock and soul of new album Sweet Warm Jelly. Texan guitarist and singer Shakey Graves follows July 4-5 with his old school acoustic blues.
L’Astral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305 Ste. Catherine St. W.)
Beginning at midnight, the dancefloor in L’Astral lights up into the wee hours with the Open House series. Born in semi-secrecy in a Montreal loft three years ago, the Speakeasy Electro Swing soirées invade the place June 28-30 to get nighthawks dancing up a storm. July 1-3, S. MOS & Friends of France load in the keyboards, turntables and other machines, fusing the smoothest rap flows with the finest in jazz rhythms. Then, the hottest Franco-Anglo duo on the Montréal reggae-dub scene, Sud-West Ghostbeard & Poirier, take up the baton July 4-7 with one marching order: get everyone dancing until they can dance no more!
Bistro Le Balmoral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305 Ste. Catherine St. W.)
Twice every evening at 10 p.m. and midnight, the Musique au Balmoral series presents free 45-minute concerts without intermission. June 28-30, double bassist Alexandre Bellegarde offers his tasty jazz-world in a duo with a different guest each night. Ranked among the finest guitarists of his generation, Stéphane Tellier moves in July 1-2 for a high-voltage duet with another six-string ace renowned for his fingerstyle mastery: Dan Livingstone. July 3-4, Shlomo and Julie offer their charming blend of folk, acoustic blues, ragtime…. The series closes with Viva Nova July 5-6, featuring singer, guitarist, percussionist and keyboardist Micäel Lüssi and a repertoire of Brazilian jazz, captivating rhythms and elegant grooves.
Savoy du Métropolis (59 Ste. Catherine St. E.)
Nighthawks can also cut loose on the dancefloor in the Savoy at midnight in the Nightcap Heineken series. Montreal combo Le Matos set the tone June 28-30 with their electro-house nocturne. Next, July 1-3, local groovemasters Afrodizz, specializing in high-octane Afrobeat and funk. Papagroove close things out July 4-7 with the wild rhythms of their fresh-baked album, Civilized Ghetto!

Every day of the Festival, the festivities kick off at noon! The finest jazz bands from high schools and cegeps show off their burgeoning chops for Festival fans on the Rio Tinto Alcan stage in the series JazzFest des jeunes, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan atnoon and 3 p.m. The action continues in the afternoon: high-energy musical entertainment takes over the Place des Festivals (at 1 p.m., 2 p.m.), the Place des Arts esplanade (4 p.m.), or the Lounge Heineken (in front of the stage) at noon, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. At 4 p.m., Les Envolées du Festival presents university groups on the CBC/Radio-Canada stage (and, on June 28 and July 2-5, in the Grande-Place in Complexe Desjardins), just before fans roll into the Rencontres festives, at 5 p.m., featuring two bands playing their own separate sets at either end of the Place des Festivals, then meeting in the middle for a joyous “musical battle”—right in the midst of the crowd! This year, the musical fireworks come from 5 equally explosive orchestras: Streenix, Swing Tonique Jazz Band, Roma Carnivale, Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and Fanfare Severni battle it out in a fusillade of brass, energy and good vibes!
A free concert in Métropolis
On June 29 at 10 p.m., we’ve added a free concert to the Métropolis program: the Jean Millaire Blues Marathon—100 years of Muddy Waters. It was the perfect occasion: this year, celebrations mark the 100th anniversary of Muddy Waters’ birth all over America. And who better than Jean Millaire, renowned since the late ’60s as the best blues guitarist in Québec, to host this free event? Four hours of continuous music, with more than 15 artists onstage. Party time!
Festival boutiques and restos
Festival fans can always find everything they need to fill up and quench their thirst on the Festival site. A craving? They can snack it up at the Barbecue, the hot-dog and Häagen-Dazs ice cream bar carts or, for a more exotic touch, taste the delectable creations at the mango-flower or porchetta kiosks. They can enjoy Italian homemade pasta at Wienstein & Gavino’s, delicious Argentinean grilled sandwiches at L’Atelier d’Argentine or a wide variety of cold soups, sandwiches and salads at SoupeSoup. They can also select from the wide variety of thirst-quenching options on the site, from the relaxed ambience of the Lounge Heineken to the friendly counters of the Jazz Bars Heineken, Bar Amarula or Bistro Express SAQ, the tempting terrasses of the Bar Terrasse, Terrasse Amarula or Bistros SAQ, delectably diverse port tastings at the Kiosque Porto Cabral or coffee at Café Jura… Finally, theTerrasse Élixirs, the enlarged Balmoral terrasse, located right on the Place des Festivals, can welcome Festival fans in full sunshine and in the heart of the action! Also, the Festival once again joins forces with Naya to offer the Fontaine Naya, a “refueling service” for bottled spring water offered for a small fee, in an effort to reduce the number of water bottles purchased. And for the more jazzistically-inclined “musicovores”, the Festival souvenir boutiques offer an extensive array of official Festival products, including t-shirts bearing the Ste-Cat logo, albums by everyone from legends to newly-discovered artists, posters, caps, etc.

The Galerie Lounge TD, located in the exhibition hall of Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme, Place des Arts, during the Festival, offers a treasure trove of works by artists from every provenance who share a common passion for jazz. The 34th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is proud to present, from June 28 to July 7, Bleu Blanc Rouge, a piece by Serge Lemoyne reproduced as a limited-edition silkscreen, numbered and signed. Additionally, throughout the Festival run, fans can purchase a silkscreen of official poster Crossroads, inspired by the Afro-American musical and cultural crosspollination at the very roots of jazz, as well as other original works by our artist in residence for over 25 years, Yves Archambault.
