Watch the interactive documentary Burgundy Jazz online for free
Today is the official opening day for the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the world's largest jazz festival. To get into the spirit of things, check out the interactive documentary I directed called Burgundy Jazz that launched last week to great fanfare.
Burgundy Jazz is an exploration of the rich history of jazz in Montreal in the decades before the festival, with a focus on the black community that was centred in the area now called Petite-Bourgogne or Little Burgundy. You'll discover many new things about Montreal and jazz, and hear about personalities such as Oliver Jones, Nelson Symonds, the International Band, the Sealey Brothers, Charlie Biddle and of course Montreal's most celebrated jazz star Oscar Peterson.
Burgundy Jazz is fully bilingual in both English or French. The main feature of the doc is the series of fourteen videos 3-4 minutes each that can be watched individually or all in a row. Each segment explores a different aspect of the emergence of Montreal's black community, jazz and night life. There are additional features such as a Timeline of events and video and audio extras.
For those coming to Montreal, it comes with an app that allows you to do a self-guided tour of the area. It comes with a companion album (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/burgundyjazz/id659705582) and also has an ebook that will launch next week on July 3.
Burgundy Jazz will be hosting a number of events over the next couple of weeks, including co-hosting the shows at the CBC/Radio-Canada stage at the jazz fest (4pm, 7pm and 9pm); partnering with L'Autre Montréal for guided jazz tours; jazz trio concerts at Atwater Market on the next three Sundays at 3pm; and live broadcasts of Quand le jazz est là... by Stanley Péan. Events are free with the exception of the tours which are $20 and require signing up in advance.
