71st Annual Golden Globe Awards – winners
The winners for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards were presented tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned to host the awards for the second consecutive year.
David O. Russell's American Hustle led the winners, taking three awards. It won for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Best Actress (Amy Adams) and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence). It had led with seven nominations.
Surprisingly, Dallas Buyers Club was also a big winner on the night with two wins for its actors. Matthew McConaughey won for Best Actor – Drama and Jared Leto won for Best Supporting Actor.
Surprisingly, 12 Years A Slave had been tied with American Hustle for the lead in nominations, but was shut out the entire evening. That is, until the very end when it won the top prize for Best Picture – Drama.
The evening got off to a bit of a rough start when a water sprinkler was set off just before the red carpet, resulting in a soggy carpet for the arriving guests. With the ceremony itself, the opening by Fey and Poehler was okay but wasn't up to the level they established last year. The first few speeches were quite awkward, especially the one given by Jacqueline Bisset. And there was a teleprompter glitch that Jonah Hill had to acknowledge and was rescued by someone bringing out a written text.
Woody Allen didn't attend to receive the Cecil B. Demille award given to him. Diane Keaton accepted on his behalf and gave an odd yet lovely speech that concluded with her serenading him with "Make New Friends."
