CAM, SODEC and NFB announce Regard sur Montréal residency
THE CONSEIL DES ARTS DE MONTRÉAL, SODEC AND THE NFB CREATE REGARD SUR MONTRÉAL, THE FIRST-EVER RESIDENCY FOR EMERGING, CULTURALLY DIVERSE FILMMAKERS
The Conseil des arts de Montréal, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) via its ACIC (Aide au cinéma indépendant – Canada) program have created the very first residency in Montreal for emerging, culturally diverse filmmakers. The $75,000 residency, known as Regard sur Montréal, will fund training, scriptwriting, production, post-production, as well as promotion and distribution of a short film. Announced today, this collaboration between the three levels of government is designed to ensure a greater presence for emerging, culturally diverse professionals working in film and television production. Cultural diversity is essential to fostering Montreal’s cultural development and boosting the city’s profile.
“Since 2006, the Conseil des arts de Montréal has been striving to ensure that the professional arts world mirrors the city’s social fabric, which is very multicultural,” the Chair of the Conseil, Jan-Fryderyk Pleszczynski, explained. “By joining forces with SODEC and the NFB (ACIC), we’re expanding our efforts to support emerging talent and integrate culturally diverse artists into the film industry, a goal that fits perfectly with our priorities.”

Harry Belafonte, Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki And Maureen O'Hara To Receive Academy's Governors Awards
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 26) to present Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O’Hara, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte. All four awards will be presented at the Academy’s 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.
“The Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “We’re absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November.”

TIFF® announced today the lineup of special guests and events that will enhance the in-cinema experience and complement the upcoming exhibition celebrating the life and work of legendary film auteur Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick will make its Canadian premiere at TIFF Bell Lightbox on October 31, 2014 until January 25, 2015. More than a decade has passed since Kubrick was honoured with a retrospective in Toronto, and the exhibition will be accompanied by the comprehensive look at his oeuvre, Stanley Kubrick: A Cinematic Odyssey. Throughout the run of the retrospective several esteemed guests, scholars and Kubrick collaborators will introduce a number of screenings and explore the themes and continued influence of Kubrick’s work.

Five Finalists Selected for the $10K CMPA Feature Film Award
Award-winning producer Jennifer Jonas today announced the shortlist for the 9th annual Canadian Media Production Association’s (CMPA) Feature Film Producer’s Award. Jennifer is Chair of the national jury and last year’s recipient.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000 at a special reception to mark the opening of the 39th Toronto International Film Festival ® on September 4th. Festival delegates are invited to attend the presentation being held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Filmmakers’ Lounge in the Glenn Gould Studio, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), 250 Front Street West.
The award was created as a partnership with the Festival in 2006. It recognizes the vision and entrepreneurship of an outstanding Canadian producer whose body of work demonstrates commitment and passion for producing Canadian feature films.

Once again this year, two winning filmmaking teams will walk away with amazing prize packages that will help them kick-start and/or finish their short film. The two prize packages of cash for the Emerging Category and Established Category to cover High Definition or Standard Definition production and post services, artist’s fees and more. We are open to all your great films ideas, be it dramatic, documentary, musical or experimental, up to 30 minutes in length, as long as you feature an Asian member in a key creative role, either in front or behind the camera.

Seven new recipients of Shaw Media–Hot Docs Funds announced
$180,000 IN COMPLETION GRANTS AND DEVELOPMENT LOANS AWARDED TO TOP CANADIAN DOC PROJECTS
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and Shaw Media are pleased to announce that seven projects have been chosen to receive a total of $180,000 in grants and no-interest loans from the Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds in its thirteenth round of disbursements. Established in April of 2008, the Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds consist of a $3-million completion fund and a $1-million development fund that aim to provide Canadian documentary filmmakers with much needed financial support at critical stages in their projects.
With these seven projects, a total of 127 projects have received funding via Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds to date, with funding totalling $2,909,000 in completion grants and no-interest loans. The application process for the second round of 2014 funding will open September 24, 2014. The Toronto International Film Festival® has dedicated one day of its 2014 edition to a celebration of the charismatic, wise-cracking, comedic genius of living legend Bill Murray. September 5 is Bill Murray Day and includes free public screenings of three comedy classics — Stripes, Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters — leading up to the world premiere of the latest Murray-starrer, Theodore Melfi’s St. Vincent. Though the Festival cannot Groundhog Day the Bill Murray Day, a contest will be held to reward Murray fans who attend all three free screenings. But, really, everyone is a winner on Bill Murray Day.
Free screenings of three of Murray’s classic comedies with frequent collaborators, director Ivan Reitman and the late, great Harold Ramis — who directed, co-wrote and co-starred with Murray — will be presented at TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 5 beginning at 10am.

2014 TIFF and NFB celebrate Norman McLaren's 100th Birthday
TIFF AND NFB MARK ANIMATION LEGEND NORMAN MCLAREN’S 100TH BIRTHDAY ON FESTIVAL STREET
On the evening of Sunday, September 7, 2014, the centenary of the birth of National Film Board of Canada (NFB) film and animation legend Norman McLaren will be celebrated with a free program of outdoor screenings, accompanied by live music, as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s pedestrian walk on King Street West, “Festival Street.”
Entitled Re-Sounding the Films of Norman McLaren, and created especially for TIFF, this program features seven short films from McLaren’s legendary oeuvre, with original scores written and performed live by Toronto pop/psychedelic/experimental group Absolutely Free. McLaren’s films will be projected onto a wall especially painted for this event, which is presented by TIFF in collaboration with the NFB.

2014 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON SEOUL WITH SIXTH ANNUAL CITY TO CITY PROGRAMME
The 39th Toronto International Film Festival looks east for the 2014 City to City programme, introducing audiences to eight daring films from Seoul, South Korea. The lineup showcases adventurous new works by contemporary Korean directors that will expose audiences to the fearless cinema emerging from the region.
Already known as a hotbed of boundary-busting and internationally acclaimed film — and contemporary arts in general — the Korean capital is home to a number of up-and-coming filmmakers poised to contribute to the future of national, regional and international cinema.
The lineup of City to City films was programmed by Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, and Giovanna Fulvi, International Programmer for the Festival. The City to City series, now in its sixth year, focuses on the films and filmmakers from a selected international hot spot breaking new ground in cinema. Past programmes featured films from Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Buenos Aires, Mumbai and Athens.

This year’s lineup includes Pascale Ferran, Jessica Hausner, Rolf de Heer, Ronit Elkabetz and Shlomi Elkabetz, Céline Sciamma, Sepideh Farsi, Rakhshan Banietemad, Christian Zübert, Cristián Jiménez, Ryuichi Hiroki and Panos H. Koutras. Unifying diverse perspectives, Contemporary World Cinema brings exciting works from 42 countries.
For the third year, The Toronto International Film Festival partners with the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs on the Contemporary World Speakers series. This initiative pairs five films in the Contemporary World Cinema programme with expert scholars from the Munk School. Audiences will have the opportunity to interact with filmmakers and scholars in extended discussions, following each film’s second public screening. This year, teens logged on to teenchoiceawards.com and cast more than 164 million votes in support of their favorite celebrities from film, television, music, sports, digital and fashion.
Hosted by Modern Family's Sarah Hyland and Teen Wolf's Tyler Posey, the special also honored Selena Gomez with the Ultimate Choice Award.
Bella Thorne and Cameron Dallas presented the Choice Candie's Style Icon award to actress, singer and dancer Zendaya for her red carpet style and bold fashion choices. Actress Odeya Rush scored the Olay Fresh Effects Breakout Star Award," which was presented by MKTO and Cody Simpson. Forty-two remarkable shorts will screen in the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts Canada programme this September. Committed to presenting the best short films from across the country, the diverse six-programme lineup will captivate audiences with a compelling collection of works created by a combination of emerging and established directors. Complementing this year’s lineup, two recently-restored shorts will screen to commemorate the centenary of the birth of animation legend and pioneer filmmaker Norman McLaren.
“From genre-bending sci-fi to delicate life stories about transformation and disillusion, this year’s selections represent the vast creativity that dominated the staggering 841 entries we received — the most in the programme’s history,” said Magali Simard, Short Cuts Canada programmer.

Third annual TIFF Gala features onstage conversation with Al Pacino
Charity Event and Cocktail To Be Held on September 3
TIFF announced today that Academy Award-winning actor Al Pacino will grace the stage for a look back at his distinguished career at the third annual TIFF Gala, an exclusive charity event which will kick off the 39th Toronto International Film Festival. The on-stage conversation with Mr. Pacino will be followed by a glamorous cocktail dinatoire, musical performances, a live auction and more. The event takes place at TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 3, 2014 at 7 p.m.
“We’re thrilled to have Al Pacino participate in our third annual TIFF Gala,” said maxine bailey, VP of Advancement at TIFF. “This important event raises much-needed funds that allow TIFF to continue our free year-round activities like Reel Comfort, a programme that brings films and special guests to mental health patients at Toronto hospitals, and Pocket Fund, which provides subsidies for children and families who would otherwise be unable to participate in our educational and cultural programming.”
